why is saying "hi" so awkward in America?

I have been saying "hi" to girls for ever and I did not realize I am being awkward until I saw this video:

LOL that's exactly how I say hi to people in real life.

in my country, it is highly rude to not say hi before you start talking to someone. even when a husband and wife are going through a divorce and they hate each others guts, when they go to the court, the first thing they say to each other is "hi" absolutely 100% of the time. you just do not start talking to someone, you say hi first.

here in America, when I say "hi" I feel like alarms start going off in the girl's head. like "oh no, someone is talking to me, I better crawl into this shell to protect myself"
but if I just start talking to her without saying "hi" she doesn't become all bitchy. but I feel rude just talking without saying hi. again, in our culture it is the most disrespectful thing you can do by not saying hi.
