I've been working out with guys who compete in internatinal strongman competitions. One was even America's Strongest Man at one point (he live in Norway at the time).
He didn't take many supplements at all, just proteins, vitamins and some glucosamine for his joints. I say that these are the supplements I'd prioritize
1) Proteins
This is the most important supplement. Sure you can get proteins from food, but unless you're able to eat ALL THE TIME becoming a 250lbs ripped behemoth isn't going to happen (if that's what you want).
Protein shakes are an effective and easy way to make sure you get enough proteins.
2) Vitamins
Good for your health, that's why you buy it. Plain and simple.
3) Fish oils
Same as above. I prefer cod liver oil, but seal oil is supposed to be even better, I've heard.
4) Creatine
A lot of hype, but its true that you can get plenty of creatin from eating red meat. I got a good effect the first time I tried it, but now that I eat meat every day I can't say that it does much for me. Since creatine monohydrate is dirt cheap anyway, I take it when I'm in a heavy phase of my training.
5) Over-priced, BS with fancy labels
99% of the remaining products on the market is BS, IMO. The only exception is - of course - anabolic steroids, growth hormones etc. But then again, that's doping and not food supplements.
