The fact is that I actually like your post, not just for the reasons the others bring up but because you actually still hide from the topic at hand. The omega male is not so much different from the beta male. He is a sort of beta male, the step below. Now I do not want to make you feel bad man, great post and as all of the others have pointed out, you just described me when I was an AFC.
Basically, your analysis is quite good but to go deeper, what causes the "omega male" to act as he does? Is it a choice to distance himself from the regular social structure? Yes it is. For good reason? No.
Alpha males... Leaders of men... True!
Beta males, trying to suck up to the alpha male wishing they were in his shoes? Close.
Beta males are everyone who is not an alpha male. Everyone who is lower than the alpha in status. A place can have several alphas, depending on group structure and an unlimited amount of betas. What you describe in your post is a wannabe. The beta who someday wants to challenge the alpha.
Omega males... (I still call them betas.) These are males who observe, wait, distance themselves etc from others. The reason is that they do not want to compete. They estimate their chances to win the fight to very small so they avoid it. If you do not try you cannot lose. So they keep their selfrespect intact by never approaching the thing that they are afraid of. Cowardly? Maybe but most of us act this way every single day.
To choose to not appear on the scale is to hide from progress. It gives us the chance to only listen to one persons opinion, our own. We think that we are better than the rest because, well lets face it we are our own universe. We set the rules and according to our rules we are great. If we are not great, we just change the rules to become great. Problem solved. However, we still envy alphas, we still compare ourselves, we still know deep down inside that we suck bigtime. This conflict is bad. Bad self confidence hello! We know that we are judged by a lowlife loser too afraid to even take part in real life, who has to escape into his own universe to feel safe! That bothers us.
How do I know this? I spent most of my life thinking like this.
How do I think now? More or less the same way but from the alpha point of view. I still think that my own opinion is more important than others. Why, I just said that it is a bad thing right??? No, because now I am the alpha male, why would I care what a beta male thinks? I am no longer watching the scale from the side, I watch it from above. The only reason I do not appear on the scale is that it does not go far enough. Why would we care about the opinions of people below us (naturally only concerning our own selfimage, we should always care about other people!!).
New me: Am I an alpha? Yeah sure whatever, in my world I am. Who cares.
Old me: Am I an alpha? I dont wanna judge myself I just wanna be left alone in my own world, go away I hiss at you and throw ninja turtle action figures after you.
So you see it all comes down to alpha or beta anyway. Either you are on top or you are not.
