Boxers have nothing on MMA Fighters. Boxing is one, yes only one aspect of fighting, and that aspect is punching. In MMA you must focus on defending a takedown, a kick, a punch, a clinch, a knee, etc. Why do you think so many boxers are switching from boxing into MMA. You will see that MMA fighters dominate Boxers when Anderson Silva beats Jones Jr. at his own game.
If a boxer were to compete in MMA without any cross-training there is no way he could succeed. . Granted boxers are great strikers but as in mma strikers only do well when they learn a good sprawl against the takedown (think Chuck Lidell). A sprawl is not part of a pure boxer's repertoire so therefore, in mma, the boxer's skill set is not well-rounded and will result in him getting grounded and pounded, submitted, or just put to sleep.
A Muay Thai fighter would destroy a boxer, the versatility of strikes would overwhelm the boxer and knock him out. also the thai clinch would also put a boxer to sleep, with a couple of knees. take for instance the fights with Anderson silva vs Rich Franklin, Silva has execellent muay thai, Franklin training in just boxing for his stand up. Franklin got knocked out in both fights, he took a barrage of kicks punches knees and had to have reconstructive surgery to repair his nose. With that there is absolutely no way a boxer could even hang with an MMA Fighter.
