Hey guys,

I like being direct from the very beginning, or sometimes being half direct (starting to talk about something random and then conceding a moment later that it was just an excuse to talk to her). Though I feel like it's not really appropriate to talk to random girls in our collage (which basically one building with about 1000 students) saying stuff like "you're cute, I want to get to know you". Another thing is that usually the girls here are with their friends, so I have to befriend the whole group on the basis of 'I want that cute friend of yours'. Which seems to me like an opportunity to be labeled 'weird' or so.

But, I don't really know any other way to know women rather than being direct. Unless there's something interesting going on that's worth having a conversation about with a random person.

Am I overthinking this?

There are many ways to strike up a conversation.

I was just waiting to get my macbook repaired at the apple store, and a girl was seated next to me shortly, I opened with " So whats wrong with yours?(laptop)"

Definitely over thinking. Just say the first thing that comes to your mind, if a girl is into you, she'll begin engaging you in conversation after a while.

So learn some game instead of using the exact same fucking line with every girl. Doesn't matter if you are direct or indirect if every approach starts the same then yeah, someone will hear you do this two or four times and call you out.
