If you're suffering from hair loss, the only two strong SPAM are propecia and minoxodil(Rogaine). But there has been tons about both of those posted here and elsewhere.
What I don't see a lot of, is legit hair shampoos. Understand in advance, no shampoo is going to be growing back dead follicles. That's a magical shampoo that doesn't exist. However, there are several that have been scientifically proven to slow hair loss significantly(none of them will stop it, that's what Propecia and Minox are for).
I'm not going to cover all of the dubious ones, or ones that used to work and stopped working when they changed the formula(like Nioxin). I'm going to tell you about the three main ones, and the two other ones.
I'm going to cover active ingredients, rather than brand names. Most of these shampoos have a variety of brands that feature the main ingredient.
SPAM
First off is SPAM/Nizoral.
%2 SPAM has been shown to reduce hair loss in men, slightly better than even %2 minoxodil(though most people using minox use it at %10 strength). SPAM is by far the best hair loss preventing shampoo that exists. However, there is a big difference between the %1 and %2 strengths. I only suggest using the %2 strength. For some reason you can't buy %2 in stores in America, but you can order it from Europe on EBay, and it's still fairly inexpensive. Do
not buy the stuff from India that claims to have the same ingredients.
Piroctone Olamine
Why is Piroctone Olamine awesome? Because it prevents hair loss about as well as %1 Nizoral, but it does it in a different way, which means
it stacks with Nizoral and propecia.
That's the main reason I have it up here in 2nd place(and why one of the "2nd tier" shampoos is considered 2nd tier).
Piroctone Olamine is only effective for people who have both MPB, AND have a scalp that excretes some excess oil(also called 'sebum'). If you don't have any excess shedding related to this scalp condition, then it probably won't help you. Those people may benefit more from the zinc shampoo in the "2nd tier".
Caffeine Shampoo
Rather than preventing hair loss, this is the one shampoo that has some
scientific studies backing its ability to grow hair faster. This is not actually hair loss prevention, more like the way Biotin can work for women. The best part about the caffeine shampoo, is that it isn't very harsh. Nearly everyone can tolerate it, and it stacks with every single shampoo listed here. However, it's also the least impactful.
2nd Tier
Pyrithione Zinc
Pyrithione Zinc has several studies demonstrating that it reduces the amount of hair loss in men with male pattern baldness. However, it's weaker than both SPAM, and Piroctone Olamine. Further, it doesn't stack with SPAM. One study looked at the effects of using SPAM by itself, Pyrithione Zinc by itself and using both. While Pyrithione Zinc by itself did show results, it showed less results than using only SPAM. And there was no difference between using SPAM and Zinc, versus just using SPAM.
So unless you can't use SPAM shampoos, I don't see any reason to use a shampoo with a Pyrithione Zinc base.
Coal Tar
Coal tar has been shown to have some positive impact on MPB. Though it can actually cause things to become worse in some men. It doesn't tend to stack well with SPAM, or Piroctone, which is why I don't really suggest it. I would try it only if you either can't handle those shampoos, or they don't work for you.
Things to avoid
Using good shampoos that are proven to prevent hair loss is only part of the battle. You also need to make sure that you don't use really bad shampoos. If you paid less than $15 for your shampoo and it's a big bottle, you're probably pouring crap on your head that's making your hair loss worse. Anything from major brands like Suave, Pantene, and Dove, have ingredients that aggravate hair loss. I'd suggest going to Ulta and asking one of the attendants to suggest a basic(non-hair loss) shampoo for you. But if you're too lazy/uncomfortable going to a beauty store, then just buy some Nexus shampoo. It's not ideal, but it's largely free of ingredients that accelerate hair loss and it's sold almost everywhere(Wal-Mart, Kroger, CVS, etc).
Hope the guide was helpful to you. Feel free to post any questions that you may have, or share your experience with shampoos.
