What kind of scenario are you talking about? Is it day game, night game, cold approaches, some kind of social gathering, etc..?
If you can't get them to invest in the conversation, it's probably the fact that you haven't given them a reason to care to invest in it. The reasoning doesn't have to be important, it just has to be presented. "I'd like to talk to you," is much different than "I'd like to talk to you because you're cute."
