Text sparingly until then - upbeat, funny stuff.
Definitely text the afternoon of the date (if the date is in the evening) or the morning of (if it's an afternoon date). Make sure you're still on by mentioning that you'll be running 15 mins late -- that's an old tactic but useful still.
Texting or talking the day before wouldn't hurt either. Nothing elaborate. I'm talking one or two messages.
