The way it starts out, I throw a girl an opinion opener. After she answers, I explain to her why I needed her advice, only to trail off my words as I just "notice" how French she looks. I then ask her if she speaks french in, well, french, and again she answers my question.

With opinion openers, you'd have to follow that up with attraction material. But in this case, after she answers whether or not she speaks the language, we'd just talk about the country and how nice it is, if we've ever been there, etc. The conversation just becomes amicable.

My sticking point would be how to create attraction towards myself instead of towards the country of love

Personally I don't like opinion openers, but that's just because it doesn't suit me. It's great though if you feel comfortable with it. Well, to your problem... let me ask, who is starting the conversation about boring stuff and countries? If it is you, shame on you

If it is her, or you're really not sure about how you got into that conversation, don't worry. What I would have done is making something out of it, like if in this case we are talking about France I would have made up something like "You know when I was in France two years ago I met a boy who looked just like you" NOTICE: "boy".

-Her: Boy?
-You: Yes, a boy! but you are way cooler.
-Her: cooler how?/what do you mean by cooler?

Now this is also where you are able to comment her personality or appearance, see where I'm going with this? I'm just making stuff up now but this is just a way to make your way out of your situation. Me, I like to be a little harsh to other girls, sometimes degrade them even (in a VERY minor way, be careful).

So I've used your advice to mention how the girl reminds me of this "boy" I met, and it works! Instead of going down the unproductive route of talking about France (or some other country), this little bit slingshots me out of redundancy and a new conversation starts.

When I say that the girl reminds me of the boy I met in France, she gets a laugh and is utterly confused. I guess this is the part where I start qualifying her? Or in your case, complimenting her?

How nice that it worked out well for you! Exactly when she gets that laugh you've suddenly opened up other topics in her head. I would have complimented her yes, to me it seems it's the natural way to go.
