I've heard Beckster talk about semi-rect openers (openers that are half way between indirect and direct). He says he uses them because they're a good way to calibrate as to where you should go; if she seems shy and introvert you can tone it down or if she's receptive you can dial it up.

Has anyone here ever used this kind of opener and what examples can you give?

Going semi-direct is a good way to approach when your social reputation matters (such as inside a classroom or social circle).
