| I'm gonna take a different approach. Before you even crack the first page of Mystery's book or Neil Strauss book or any other PUA's, read books on self-confidence and leading a productive life. Personally I suggest doing the 30 day program by Tony Robbins- "Personal Power II" (you can download the audio book torrent at Pirate Bay). Stephen Covey has some good stuff out there also (audiobooks on Pirate Bay also). David D. has a good inner-game series that focuses on interally becoming a man. All in all do some soul searching about what your purpose in life is.
The key to being a good pickup artist is being a man who can really (not fake it) stand by himself and doesn't need a woman to find happiness. Books and programs like the one's mentioned above will help with getting your "inner-game" solid and automatically developing confidence. As you progress you will notice that women and people in general can pick up on your change as soon as you walk into a room. They see it in how you carry yourself, the way you talk, what you say, and how you behave. This type of persona attracts not just women, but people without ever having to open your mouth.
The thing about real good pickup artists, is that they don't succeed just in getting laid and women, they are successful in life. A lot of them have their own businesses (David D., Juggler, Neil Strauss), are making good money, and attract not just women, but people period (how else could they run boot camps across America costing thousands of dollars). This is because before they focused on mastering women, they focused on mastering themselves and life.
In my opinion, you will be miles ahead of the curve if you first have your "inner-game" (self-confidence, life purpose, values to live by) mastered before you try and master picking up women. Cuz I guarantee you, if you're fucked up internally and don't know who you are as a person (no purpose, no sense values to live by, happiness is dependent on external circumstances), women (and people in general) will be able to pick up on it.
While his books and teachings are phenomenal, Mystery seems to me, like a perfect example of someone who got all the techniques perfected but never perfected himself. If you've read the Game, you know that Mystery is likely a manic-depressive (sorry in advance to anyone who worships Mystery). In the book he would be excited on day and ready to commit suicide the next. The guy can get laid by the sexiest women in the world, yet has experienced a profound sense of unhappiness. Honestly I'd rather never fuck a girl again and know how to create my own happiness, than fuck a girl everyday and be trying to take my own life. Luckily I can do both, but when it comes down my happiness is far more important than pussy.
One more thing and I'll stop with my Dr. Phil bullshit... if you just get your confidence and inner game together you will notice a dramatic improvement in your game without ever having to touch any of the PUA books. I still advocate PUA books because they will refine your raw talent and provide you with effective techniques. On top of that the stuff that you will read will make a lot more sense and you will know how to improvise to make it work for you. You won't be using shit verbatim...you'll be redefining negs, creating your own DHV techniques, creating peacock methods that work with your personality, and so much other shit because you will have a handle on yourself. Make sense?
Well I wrote a fucking book, but I hope this helps.[/i]
