I was at this hippy girls house, shes a HB9, when she had a small party and she has all sorts instruments laying around the place. I have been playing the guitar for 6 years now and i'm pretty fuckin good. she had an entry level acoustic guitar and i picked it up and started playing a little tune. to my surprise every girl in the room left to go make a snack or watch tv in the living room while every dude in the house gathered around and asked me about the guitar and if i could teach them how to play. i thought the girls would have been into it but it really scared them...
my attitude towards playing was humble and I played a nice, fun, classic rock tune. has this happened to anybody before? why were the girls so intimidated by me playing? i'm lost

It's all about the vibe. Being a guitar player, I know the mindset that happens upon walking into a room and seeing an instrument (squirrel!) But if the rest of the party is happy doing what they're doing and you go all: hey, I'm gonna play this guitar! then don't expect them to jump right onto your vibe. At least not EVERYONE left the room LOL

I generally don't bust out guitar at parties anymore, even my own, unless people ask or the social vibe naturally leads itself there. I bring along an acoustic for camping or beach parties but don't break it out until the time is right. Also it's not really for attracting girls in the first place - I'm not worried about that happening, because it will happen anyway. I just want to add some life to the party.

You can always use the guitar as a conversation starter. Ask who in the house plays music and start talking about it. It might lead to jamming later on.

You just didn't handle the attention right. Let the guys flock to you (no homo) and the women will follow. The girls will start asking "what's this guy's deal?"

On the other hand, not sure how long you went on singing, but just a couple of lines could have sufficed. If you were standing around, strumming a guitar and singing out every lyric, that could be awkward.
