I am good at recognizing accents. and I know a few words in Russian like "very good" "hello" "good bye"

today I tried to talk to a girl and as soon as she opened her mouth, I knew she was Russian so I said in Russian "very good"
she looked down and didn't say anything. I said "oh, you are not Russian?" she said "yes" but then everything went south from there?

what's the problem? Is recognizing someone's nationality racist or something?

lol. It's better to ask rather than assume. You followed your Russian accent stunt with a closed question.

From a social perspective, it's definitely not racist. Despite that, you can never be certain where a person is from, so that's why it's better to ask where they're from. A very common example is if you hear someone speaking with a Spanish accent and then you ask if they're Mexican (same as guessing). People from other Latin American countries often get offended or get defensive about this because they may feel people forget there are other Spanish-speaking countries than just Mexico. Either that, or they're prejudice against Mexicans themselves, so you're insulting them.

Also, if you guess someone's nationality, there could be a chance that they're insecure about it and are not sure what preconceived ideas you may have about where they're from. Like, maybe this Russian chick could come from a wealthy background and she's thinking you have visions of her standing in the bread line in Communist Russia, chugging a bottle of vodka, with dreams of being someone's mail order bride.

Politics and sociology aside, from a pick up standpoint, it is definitely better to ask than assume because you generally want to ask questions to have her gabbing on than answering "yes" or "no". Also, in these cases, when dealing with someone of a different nationality, they want to give you their version of what things are like in their country, not to have you with an "oh yeah, I know" type of attitude. Curiosity has a better chance at working in your favor.

It is not racist. I do think this is a good opener, and depending on your further game, this is al right.

Maybe that night, it is the girl and not you. Maybe she was already a bit down, or just not in the mood. Don't blame yourself.

Hey mate I have what I call the accent game. I'm also really good at pegging accents. This I what I did in field actually last night. Excuse me darling I just have to ask do you have a northern itailian accent?? I pegged it right on her OMG!!!! how did you know?!?!? I told her how I have some relatives from Corleone, and the convo went from there. What you did was good, but maybe a bit to direct next time even if you know put across in question form like you know where she's from, but you just want confirmation.
In my experience it is a huge turn on for a girl of a different ethnicity if you can pick her accent! It shows you're cultured, well traveled, or just knowlegable any of the 3 are a turn on for a girl. Even if you get it wrong a lot of times the girl will say wow you think I sound spanish?? And the convo goes from there. I personally have never had a bad experince with the "accent game" in fact that's how I've met the majority of high quality women I've dated.

Anyway hope that helps good luck!!

It doesn't matter what guys think about whether it's offensive or not, it matters what the chicks think. That said, you're definitely not going to not offend every woman you talk to. My take is that a lot of people (women) might not view it as "racist", but some could definitely find it offensive, especially if you guess wrong. Some chicks won't care at all, but you need to be aware that you may be turning some women off from the start unnecessarily. If you get the feeling you might be holding yourself back by doing this, abandon this strategy. If you must know, she'll let you know (it'll come up in conversation) pretty quickly after you talk to her for a while. Just make sure you get there first.

I noticed that you said the first thing you said to her was in Russian. It might help to introduce yourself first and ask her her name. Then, you can say something like, "Oh, is that Russian?" and if she says yes, you know that she most likely won't be offended when you speak Russian. A lot of people don't like playing the "ethnicity guessing game" with total strangers, whether you' guess correctly or not.
