With sort of teasing/qualifying during the following convo (wow you girls are hard work aren't you? you sound like high maintenance)

Seems to get every girl I try it on talking, to varying degrees, but I don't know what to do with it after. Asking for a number at this point I think will seem like I've made up the story just to talk to her and get her number. What can I say to transition without it making the opener seem like it was made up just to talk to her, and thus am a liar and crafty?

A classic opinion opener... You can as well ignore it completely and just say "hi"and take it from there.

Keep it in mind. You don't get girls with smooth pick up lines and having great transitions. You get them from how you present yourself and how you represent yourself as a confident guy.

Little tips, Instead of "Can I ask your opinion..." go with "Hey, give me your opinion..." Subtle difference but it gets you in the mindset that you aren't begging her for anything, you're going to get what you want.

As a follow up comment on something she's wearing, if it's a group of girls you can do the good girl bad girl routine, blah blah blah...
