In the hypothetical case that my long distance girlfriend was to ring/SPAM and say " I think we should reduce/break contact etc "

How would I best handle the situation so I'm not caught off board if it were ever to happen

Just be mature about it and tell her something along the lines of:"I understand baby, take whatever time you need to figure things out for yourself". And while she considers it, you should be considering if this is working for you as well. Do or say whatever you want, the important thing is not to be needy/clingy.

Long distance relationships rarely work. The lack of physical touch and face to face interactions will just kill it in itself.
