If you want to get in more serious online dating, go for a pay site. On the free site the chance of getting rejected is much higher as there are more men writing more messages. Of course you can improve your reply rate by optimizing your profile and using clever opening lines, but you must walk the extra mile there to get a decent rate.

You must also consider the regional aspects, for me OKC is suboptimal as the locals do not use it here. But it is good if I want to meet American girls in Prague. But as you are from Connecticut, this should not be a problem for you.

A lot of people here using PlentyOfFish. I wanted to try it, but stopped after they wanted too much information from me. No I will not brag about my salary or how long my last relationship lasted. Their business model is just way to obvious.

So I will agree with TheFury and would recommend Match.com.

Personally, I' haven't tried match, but speaking from experience, I did meet some interesting girls on eharmony. I've found that generally, if a girl is willing to pay cash to meet a guy, she's pretty serious about making some kind of connection. I might try match at some point but like I said, personally, I met some pretty decent girls on eharmony so maybe look at them as well.

PoF is pretty good for the number of girls on there. I have had some success with messaging girls first but they get so many messages due to the number of guys you have to be amazing, and even then, if she just deleted 30 crappy messages she's not going to be in the most receptive mood, you really have to do something .That said, it's worth it as long as you expect a low response rate.

I have more luck on PoF with girls who message me first. I generally get about 5 messages a week, ok 2 of those are from not so hot girls, but I've had some 8s message me. The great thing about PoF is that most guys have shockingly bad profiles so you don't need to do much at all to stand out. Have a good main picture that makes girls click through and check you out and then a decent profile. I've had more fun just sitting back and responding to girls who message me first than worrying about openers. Most girls have no game and just say "hi" but whatever, you know you'll get a response when you reply so it's worth taking the time to write something witty.

OkCupid is a different story. There's a lot less people on there and they, for some reason, tend to be more intelligent/geeky/alternative/artsy. As someone who falls into that category it suits me well. That said, I only get 1-2 messages a month on there from girls who message me first. This is for several reasons. Firstly, there are less people on the site so less people even seeing my profile. Secondly, OKC pretty much forces every person to write a better profile so the competition is (mildly) better. I've had a better response rate to messages I send on here first. That said, I hooked up with a stunningly beautiful girl who messaged me first.


Whatever you do, it's worth maintaining profiles on both sites and logging in occasionally to look active even if you only ever respond to the couple of messages you get from girls who open you. You're onto a winner, ok it may only lead to a couple of dates a month if you wait for girls to message you first but the effort:reward ratio makes it worthwhile.

Definitely go on a paid site. Match.com has a lot of good feedback from the guys I've worked with. Also look and see if there are any local ones in your nearest big city. They tend to have people who are more serious about having a relationship.
