I assume these are guy friends, not girl friends?
In any event, what I would do when in that situation is really easy, I'd just say, WTF are you guys talking about? Care to clue me in on whatever the hell it is I'm missing?
Real friends will likely go "crap man, sorry, and give you the download." Shit friends who are jealous of you or feel like their competing with you or some shit will avoid doing the former. In that case, the solution is simple, just like a chick who will hang out with you as a backup option, these guys will hang out with you when there's nothing better to do.
Hopefully your two friends aren't the latter type.
Well, one of them is a girl; the other is a gay guy. Whenever I converse in a group and hold the floor, I naturally bring the third person into the conversation whenever s/he goes quiet or doesn't feel like s/he is interacting much. I'd say, "What do
you think?", "Doesn't that seem interesting to
you?", and other things that'll get them to talk.
But if my friends don't invite me into their conversation, I either just pass time on my cellphone, continue eating (if we're in the college dining hall), or
look for the gap that'll allow me to talk.
I don't think they're "competing" to get each other's attention and validation. Maybe their communication skills just suck, period. But if I need to interrupt their conversation and take the wheel as you suggested, then I'll do just that.
And friends who hang out with me because I'm a "last resort" kinda sounds bad. I should be the first person they go to! lol
