Do you guys think it'd be an effective opener to just ask a girl if she had a pen or pencil I could borrow? or would she sniff that one out?

and if she says yes what would be good ways to carry on the conversation after or when I return the pen? I have yet to try this out mostly because I am a pussy

Yes, that's perfectly fine as long as you follow up with a comment and then a conversation after. I asked one chick if she could watch my stuff for a second because she seemed trustworthy and told her not to disappointment me and followed that up with some light conversation after

What could be a good comment? maybe asking what shes working on?? I also would have to return it at some point, should I wait till then to spark a good conversation? Leave her thinkin bout the guy who has her pen until I return it

I think asking for a pen can be a nice routine.
You can come back after a minuet and say: "You gave me a bad pen. I was trying to finish my paper, but instead it only writes in arabic (or other language)" or "But instead it's writing the last chapter of Ulysses. Spoiler alert!"
I think I'll give it a try.
As for the "Can you look over my stuff", usually girls ask me that. So when they return I say: "I won't belive what just happened. A huge thug tried to steal your stuff but I fought him.That criminal scum had a machete so you owe me a big one". Always get a huge laugh.

Dude, you are in a library, There are literally tons of things to talk to a girl about, It is all about Observation, look at the girl, ask yourself " what is she reading? what is she doing studying?, etc" based on a simple observation, if she is reading the same study maternial as you or you just happen to know a bit about what she is studying, you can walk up ask for an pen or pencil, her most likely response would be "sure, here you go" then you can follow up by asking " hey, isn't that Ulyesses that you're reading(or whatever it is), I read that, man thats an (awesome book, long book, boring book, etc...it depends on the girl you are talking to and what she is doing the book study for and how she feels, looks, reacts towards the study before you talk to her and by watching her initial response after you ask), what your opinion on that (whatever you think of from that book). The Key is Listening for hook words, and going from there.

Another thing you said you was a pussy, now Im assuming you are scared of feeling rejected, so I want you to look at it from this analogy i heard from somewhere, ... when you offer someone, a total stranger, a gum, and they say no, Do you feel hurt after they reject the gum? NO of course you don't... it is the same when you approach a girl, you are a total stranger to them as they are a stranger to you, you do not know each other, so when you go talk to the girl, and she rejects you, it is the same analogy form of the gum offer, you simply move on to another girl and you can always come back to her and try again another time.....
