there are two ways to accomplish this.

i didn't watch the video again, but i think i remember

1) first way to do it is by having a wingman. you pretend to write something (or you actually write something, it doesn't matter) and then you exchange papers with your wing who is behind the target. I think I remember you can see Mystery put his hand up by the target's ear. he is actually exchanging papers.

2) method two, works well, but it's best used in the context of the 'spirit writting' magic trick (because it looks a bit choppy, as if a spirit wrote it). But you put a small piece of lead (just snap off a pencil head) and stick it on your thumb. You can then pretend to write anything, then when she tells you the middle name initial (it's key to use an initial not the name, because an initial is easy, and only ONE letter that you have to write) you simply hold the paper in your hand with the lead on your thumb, and write it with your thumb as you're talking to her (preocupying her with mubmo jumbo talk)

But the point is you guess the middle name , she does not initially give it to you ?

on the paper he has written only the first initial.

he SAYS that he guesses it. but he doesn't actually show it to her until AFTER she says it. this gives him time to pull the trick

yes, what i said initially was correct. i just watched the video again.

he uses method #2

watch closely at 2:04. he writes it with his left hand using his thumb

Number 2 is the correct method (lead under the finger).
