I ride the commuter rail to work everyday so I know this is true now.

Days when I have nothing to read, nothing in my hands, staring blankly out the window, the seat in front of me or ogling the girls that walk by, I look like a schmuck and nobody wants anything to do with me.

Days when I'm enthralled in a book, i look intelligent. Place me beside a young girl and she's bound to ask me "what are you reading?"

Don't just read any book though. Know what you're reading, know a bit about the author. I read books by Chuck Palahniuk (author of Fight Club) and so whenever they ask me about the book i tell them it's by the guy who wrote Fight Club, making it easy for them to relate. Plus the books he writes are so god damn good that it gives me an opportunity to speak passionately about something and work on my storytelling skills.

Magazines do not count as books. Books about seducing women, also do not count.

I know what you mean, when I'm in a public place by myself I am always doing my best to look busy. If I go into a coffee shop I have a book, or some work with me. Sometimes, I will even be writing a post to put here on the forum. Other times, I may flip out my cell phone and make several calls. Its a good idea to DHV yourself and show that you have your own life.

Chuck Palahniuk is a great author and I recommend his books also. I think I will try to take this advice, however I am usually only on the train for about 10 minutes. (It's only one stop away)

My question is would this also work in a bookstore? I have a feeling it would be overlooked because basically everyone is reading.

just my opinion, but i think that if you're sitting in a bookstore, you don't seem to have anything better to do. The train is ideal because it's obvious that I'm going somewhere.

Yeah love reading books on the train aswell, Books tell a lot about people. (I have been reading some cold reading books in the train last week, Not gonna go into that now.) I usually read psychology books, some novels, cold reading and magic books.
