I never thought pickup was a real thing, I always thought it was a sham or some sort of manipulation that I had no interest in learning.

Yes it's quite real and has changed many of our lives on this here forum. Don't feel bad the average guy doesn't hook up with many women nor have any idea about conversational skills.

You can start by checking out approaching and opening section. There is a lot of good material there. Read up on inner-game and conquering approach anxiety. There are also good resources when it comes to books.
