Well; I don't have much mother-hen experience but some generic pickup principles can be applied here. You should ignore the target and focus on her friends, win them over. NEVER treat them poorly or when the mother-hen sweep her away she will have proven her point that you shouldnt be associated with them. Even neg the target a little bit and then prepare yourself to bounce to a more private location with the target once you have conveyed some personality and built trust with the Mother Hen.

There is a reason they call it mother hen. She is much like a mother treat her as such. How do you think it would go if you tried to banter with your mom? Idk about you, but I'd probably get sent to my room and grounded for a week. How do you make your mom happy? Boost her ego tell her nice things when she deserves them.

I use the same method to game everyone. I talk to the entire group including the mother hen. I ask them an open ended question, I reward them for their effort answering my question, and then I relate to their answer. This works on everyone mother hen included. I almost always have the entire group attracted to and comfortable with me by doing this.

Also since you are now leading the group you have the ability to keep it together or break it apart. One thing I do pretty consistentally to isolate a girl is merge 2 groups. Say group a and group b both like water skiing. I say hey let's go over here these guys over here love water skiing you have to meet them. Then after mother hen has someone else to talk to and realizes how cool I am she has no choice, but to let me isolate her friend.

I've been the mother hen, (or more like, lesbian protection from creeps) and I'll tell you what... you start trying to make her look silly or foolish and the next thing you know, it's time for the group girl trip to the bathroom and you are done for. We do talk about you guys in there.

From personal experience, win the hen over. If the fugly/annoying/non-target friend feels comfortable with you and likes you, she'll be happy her friend found a "good" guy and will probably leave you alone. But if she's off in a corner by herself all night leaving you guys alone, do check in on her a couple times (before you get too busy getting busy). That will impress her friend and keep you in good standing. Or at least "merge groups" so that the hen is busy elsewhere and you can get some privacy.
