It just feels awkward executing them. Is there a way to make it less awkward? _________________ You miss every shot you don't take.

Just keep doing it until it feels natural. Or you can subcommunicate a time constraint with body language. Open over your shoulder, every now and then look around like you're bored, and rock your shoulders away like you're going to leave.

If at any time in the interaction it get's "weird" you go back to your initial opener and say, "see... I told you this might seem a little weird." And LAUGH it OFF. If you're not smiling or on the verge of it, sometimes things can get intense, awkward, or stale, so... to call back on your opening line can re-spark the interaction.
I use that opener ALL THE TIME at most of the time it works. Sometimes people are NOT looking to interact and it's NEVER personal.
