You want to me holding her hands and such, or arm around the waist.
The method I use on a date like scenario for the first kiss is the folowing
"Can I see your hand for a sec"
when she shows you just hold it normally. This works because reaching for someone's hand for the first time can be awkward if the two of you are just sitting next to each other. My asking her, she is giving her hand to you, instead of you pulling it towards yourself which lowers the chance she will pull away because although you instigated the hand hold, she will unconsciously think she did by following your simple request, can I see your hand. Once she gets comfortable with that go for the thigh hold, then arms around body. from there her head will be resting on your shoulder and you can very gently with you other hand guide her chin to your and kiss her.
This is how I do it, I gradually get closer and closer to her then just guide her chin with me hand
