I find it easier to meet someone new than to re-open someone I already know. Even if I succeed in getting into a conversation, it's not to say I can excite her as much after 3 months as I could had I just met her.

Also remember that hot girls get lots of attention from guys, and a message saying "hey, long time no talk, let's get together" always sounds at least a little desperate.
