A few of good tips for any cologne:
When shopping for colognes, avoid spraying testers on the piece of card you tend to get, just ensure you don't have an allergy to anything in any the products your interested in (you'll be needing to wear it on your skin anyway), in essence that is just the raw product, so yes it is probably going to smell great, but it hasn't mixed with your own natural oils in your skin so its not totally defining you or giving you a more unique scent (see below).
Go and 'properly' test out some samples to find which works best for you and your skin, most people are not aware you can get proper samples, tiny plastic vials which is probably enough cologne for one use, If you can't get samples to take home then try a couple of testers which interest you (one of each wrist and obviously don't rub/mix them together) let them dry naturally for 15-20 minutes then waft each one in front of your face a couple of times.
Don't press your nose on your wrist and take a huge inhale because that not what women are going to be doing to you when they are around you... well at least not until later if all goes well
Use sparingly, women are apparently more sensitive to smell then men so you don't need to be bathed in half a bottle to smell great. A woman only needs to notice your scent in close proximity, when your talking to them, not choking on it from across the room, or to put in another way, offending her sences - A couple of squirts is more than enough.
When you find a cologne which is suited to your skin, you may stop noticing it as much after you've applied and its dried and it doing its job, (think of a new air freshener, it smells good for a few days but then you become used it, but other people such as your guests do) this isn't an indication you need to use more as long as you know you've put some on you don't need to reapply, so avoid the toilet attendant bearing colognes (not sure if this is just a UK trend in busy clubs) as tempting as it can be for a 'refresh' on a night out, you'll end up overloading with cologne (see above). My only exception to this is unless you've simply forgot to put some on that evening, in which case stick to something you've tried and know works for you.
To conclude here are a few of my personal favourites:
Diesel Diesel Only The Brave
Diesel Fuel For Life
212 Men
Joop! Homme (Avoid white shirts if it has a pink/red colour to it, it may stain and shows under UV light - I'm sure they removed this florescent dye in later batches but i'm not braving that one again lol)
