There's tons of material out there about approach anxiety and opening. I highly suggest the art of approaching by thundercat if you want reading material.

Yes you can. I couldn't a year ago and now I can. You can too.
How do you think? You already know the answer, go up and do it.

Situational stuff is the easy answer. The most basic one is always the weather. It's easy to just comment on it being a nice spring or summer or something. Hopefully you can find something even more immediate to the environment to comment on. This should get you started.

At the very least, you can just practice going up to people and asking for the time. You'll see most people are perfectly friendly.

well if you have AA, first be sure to approach targets in your age group or younger - they will be more receptive.

I day game A LOT, and really try to say anything. Yesterday I was standing next to a young HB9 (cold set, maybe 20-21) in the supermarket but not doing the 3 second rule, I waited too long and pussied out. But when she actually got next to me in line 5 mins later, I told her:

Me: Hey you were the one who was changing her watch battery just now weren't you? (she had been when I pussied out).
HB: (little smile) Yeah.
Me: So you had been frozen in time then a bit there... (I made like a frozen statue)
HB: (good laugh and smile) Yeah! hahaha

Then I just carried on talking about what I was doing.... I didn't wan't to number close because she wasn't my style or age target, I was just practicing.... But you can say just about anything if you're relaxed enough and don't care about the outcome.
