Now i've been meaning to get one for a while now and i am going into it with the mindset what suit would barney wear.

Black suits are great if you can only have one and you need it for business, church. There are some stores online that do decent custom suits for a good deal (Indochino, Black Lapel) or there's always your friendly neighbourhood tailor.
As for material, try wool for all season. It's a safe bet. Cotton for anything besides winter, linen for summer. Avoid pinstripes unless you're rather skinny.
I'd also check a GQ style guide to see what fits your body best. Suits are great and not enough people wear them right.
