Just wondering what people on here with lots more experience think of this. I've been tweaking my profile a fair bit recently, getting advice from my SPAM who's a psychologist (she suggested the first bit, which is there for 1. pre-selection and 2. to reassure girls that I will actually reply to their messages, since they handle rejection much worse than guys).

I do receive some messages, maybe one a week or something like that. I get replies to about 40-50% of the FIRST message I send, but I'm rarely able to keep the conversation going for some reason.

My self-summary
Quote:
*****
I try to respond to all the messages I get but as I'm not permanently glued to my computer it sometimes takes me a few days.
*****

First I'll get the sales pitch out of the way... keeping it brief: I'm kind, intelligent, down-to-earth, passionate and happiest when smiling. Any more back-patting than this and I feel my unrivalled modesty may be at threat.

I like to keep fit and I love the feeling after a good workout at the gym or a yoga class. I can also be found going to ceilidhs (traditional Scottish dancing) quite regularly. I seem to have loads of energy.

I like libraries, exhibitions (about almost anything), museums, hard to find places and pubs with a little SPAM.
What I'm doing with my life
Quote:
I'm finishing my PhD in computational chemistry. If I tell you any more than that there's a risk of boring you. If you're interested though feel free to ask. Suffice to say I'm very ambitious and the sort of scientist who makes the other scientists jealous. I like what I do, and I'm really fortunate for that.
I'm really good at
Quote:
Giving presentations to a room full of scientists, and making them laugh. Doing science demos for school kids and scaring the teachers :D

Racing other people in the swimming pool without them knowing...

I'm not bad at cooking either.
The first thing people notice about me
Quote:
Blond hair. I'm often told that I look German, which I take as a compliment.
Favourites
Quote:
Books (I don't read all that much):
Girl with the dragon tattoo, The Golden Bird, 1984. Surely you're joking Mr Feynman. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Currently reading "A Brave New World".

Movies (quite random really):
V for Vendetta, A Beautiful Mind, The Matrix, The Inside Man, Pirates of the Caribbean, Alien, Bourne, Sliding Doors, Fight Club, 28 Days/Weeks Later, Inception, and basically anything which makes me laugh.

Television (basically what my SPAM are watching):
I like Argumental, Have I Got News for You, and also Mock the Week. The Big Bang Theory (I can match the characters to my uni colleagues!), the I.T. crowd, Family Guy.

Music (eclectic):
Lots and lots of different types of music, from rock through to folk and also classical. As for actual band names, AC-DC, Gaelic Storm, Metallica, Brian McNeil, Nightwish, Manowar, Green Day, The Soviettes, The Fratellis and more...
Six things I couldn't do without
Quote:
Outdoors,
friends and family,
exercise,
internet,
music.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Quote:
Something impressively clever to write here.
Typical Friday night I am...
Quote:
There is no typical Friday night. I might be at a ceilidh, at a yoga lesson, at the cinema, at the pub with friends, or out for dinner with friends.
The most private thing I'm willing to admit.

When I was a kid, Egon from the Ghostbusters was my rolemodel.

Oh yeah, and I practice Shibari.

you seem provably intelligent and somewhat busy which is good. However you seem a little timid and you are hedging a lot of your better statements with disclaimers which shows you are doubting yourself and showing lack of confidence. Try to be more fun and less academic and German sounding if possible.

I used to be pretty timid, getting over that these days. I do not understand what you mean about hedging my better statements with disclaimers... you mean the bit at the beginning about replying to messages?

you make little quips and you can say "these are funny" and "lightening the mood", but the effect its gonna have on most girls is that you are wishy washy, beta, and indecisive. You may think im nitpicking but im telling you the effect of massing a bunch of these equivocations together isn't attractive. I know as I used to do this kind of stuff myself.

So if I just removed those disclaimers (or apologies, as they could also be called) the profile will be better?

you should make it more exciting and act like you have some cool shit going on, remember most girls who you want to meet up with are looking for a fun and exciting guy with good social status. I'm the biggest nerd in the world but I absolutely dont show that shit around chicks until its too late for them muhaha.

You have avoided a lot of common pitfuls of online profiles by not trying to act like nice, stable, provider guy but it can be improved. Your best tool is to look at other guys profiles (no homo) and you will quickly see guys that have good shit going on, as they will have girls comments and awards all over their page.

oh ya this may be the worst of the bunch
