Hey guys,
ive always been a husky sort of guy not fat by any stretch of the imagination but enough extra for the winter months, but lately ive decided to get into shape and actually do something about it. Ive created a plan, have charts, routines, locations, exercise programs the works. However that is not my problem, what i lack is a serious level of discipline and focus, i know what i want and how to get it but i fall off the track all the time. I was wondering how you guys out there force yourselves to stay on target, i start and have great gains but a week later regress.
Ive read places and from fitness instructors that people have different methods and one such is to reward yourself for a great work out, i just dont understand the concept. this is a side bar just for curiosities sake but if u want something cant u go get it? like food is in the fridge or cupboard, xbox near at hand, friends who want to go out on the fone, just curious how would you reward yourslef if u can easily have your rewards already?

Anyway any help concerning staying focussed on the goal and working with more dedication would be much appreciated. Thanks
-Krookshank

There are 2 things you need:

-confidence
-motivation

You have the first and lack the second, obviously.

So to become motivated you have to think of a reason why it's important to YOU. You know when you see doctors that smoke or are obese, these guys KNOW they shouldn't but the reason to stop isn't big enough for them to. Just like your problem.

So tell me, why do you want to be fit? Do you want to be:

-more sexually attractive
-healthier
-live longer
-feel better

What is it? I can't tell you as only you know. You have to find that reason why you want to do it.

A story I know is this man who slipped in the bathroom and broke his hip. Was in hospital for months and doctors wouldn't discharge him until he could see him walk. It was hard to walk, really hard. The man gave up and stayed in bed refusing to get out and try to walk. He hated the hospital Somebody helped him find his motivation, he knew he had to walk again but that wasn't his motivation. His motivation was to walk his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day. A doctor then made him visualise doing walking his daughter down the aisle, how he felt etc. Within 5 minutes the man was out of bed trying his hardest to walk.

Morale of the story: your source of motivation might not be what you think, you gotta find it and then visualise doing it. Visualise being that fit and healthy guy on the beach with women clutching on to both arms (if that's your motivation). Literally spend 5 minutes thinking about it, how you'll feel, what your life would be like etc etc. Literally go down to the finest details of what you're wearing and what you hear and smell.

And bingo, you have motivation.

You don't need rewards if you really want it. You have to ask yourself, what's better xbox or that hot babe on the beach in summer?

Realise what your goal is. What do you want to achieve. When you're tempted to eat that pizza, think about your goal. If you order that pizza, then you obviously don't want to reach your goal as much as you thought you did.

As you train consistently, you will find your motivation changing. It will either get stronger or weaker. I have trained for all sorts of reasons, for girls, out of insecurity, through anger, for health, out of passion, and to be a champion. Some are better motivators than others. I cant tell you what is personally going to click in your mind to get you off the chair and into the gym, but I will tell you the people that go the farthest are the ones with a passion for the training rather than a passion for the results.
