This past weekend, I was out at the bars dancing with a few of my friends and I had been talking to this young lady for a couple hours, bought her drinks and danced with her extensively. She invited me back to her place and prior to anything escalating from the situation, her friends had asked her for a place to stay since they were intoxicated. I helped her friends get up the stairs to her apartment and made sure they all were comfortable before heading home, however, I realize now that I forgot to get the phone number of this girl so I could see her again sometime this week.

She is good friends with a couple mutual friends of mine and I'm sure I'll see her again eventually, however, I want to be a bit more aggressive in my approach with her. We are facebook friends as of yesterday and I was thinking of just messaging her, thanking her for offering me a place to stay that night and being so hospitable and trying to start up a small convo from that so I can ask her to get ice cream or something similar sometime this week with me. Does that seem like a reasonable plan or should I approach this differently?

You missed a few Golden opportunities my man:
1. getting her drinks and talking its pretty easy to get a kiss.
2. dancing is a lot easier as you could caress her and make move.
3. you were at her place, how the hell did you not get a kiss (with or without her friends present).
its a shame you dont have her number but there is still things you can do.

you said you had her on Facebook, dont talk extensively on FB. Just say after a few words. Listen im tired of messaging like this back and forth, give me your number and ill give you a call.
call her and set up a date within 5 minutes any more and you'll truly be stuck in no mans land. set up a date, somewhere quiet and nice where you can talk and have a drink. Starbuck's sounds good...and from there do whatever you feel like

p.s in the future when buying a girl a drink do this.
ask her what she likes to drink.
if she sais no thank you
say i didnt say i was gonna buy you one, i just wanted to know what you like.
later on bring her that drink....she will like it

I ended up getting her number, taking her on a date, and things are going really well. I recognize I really missed some opportunities, and in the future I have the experience to build off of. I got lucky this time though, so I'm definitely counting my blessings.
