Body language isn't about "reading" someone. You can't look at someone for less than 5 minutes and figure out their whole life story.
The only thing that you can ever figure out about body language is social standing. Who is an awkward loser, and who is confident. Who is scared, and who is calm. Who is out of their comfort zone, and who is completely unfazed. Who is fumbling their way towards sex, and who can do it smoothly.
People are very easy to read once you've worked hard at it. You can tell what type of person they are because you get a good feel for people. When I started studying body language I thought of the best possible cheapest way to do it, well there are bar poker tournaments here. They are free(tip the dealer), and you can stare at people the whole time.
When you go to an environment like this where you start figuring out their reactions, how people react to what. Different personalities, you just get a good feel for people. Now at a cash game I would take a lot about their mindset into consideration based off social class, confidence, personality type by their apparel, their body language, their voice, their words. You notice everything when you are putting together a person, but it is easier then you think. You don't really make assumptions about a person, you use your understanding of natural human behavior to understand the type of person this person is. Did they overreact to something small? Was the overreaction fear or anger?
Most of the time if you understand body language well enough you know what caused that reaction, a thought or an event. When someone reacts to a thought their eyes move to access them(how they communicate with themselves). When they react to an event can tell you why. How they reacted to that event tells you a small bit about that person, when you get use to noticing those small bits everywhere you go you start realizing while people aren't always predictable but they usually are. Certain types of people gain certain habits. Insecure girls show anxiety, and constantly preen.
You can't figure anyone's life story out by that but you can certainly figure out what type of person someone is and thus make him predictable by his behaviors. You can almost always tell what types of events influence someone like that, if a girl had sexual abuse or rape, you just kind of know. If they had a rough child hood, you know, you just kind of get a feel. You may not know what happened but you know something did to condition this human to be the human they are today.
This by no means is something you can do in 2 weeks, it takes time and effort but you can certainly get to a point where you can connect with people with ease. Where you can understand them, it takes a lot of studying, and a lot of field work, a lot of conversations.
