As I said in my introduction I have worked in clubs and bars doing security since I was 18, I also started training when I was 5.

Rules:

Avoid going to the floor at all costs, it will limit your field of view and also makes it harder to avoid strikes as well as strike.

Never expect a fair fight.

Always look for an exit and use it over fighting

Keep moving and don't get surrounded

What to train:

If we assume all things are equal (quality of gym, instructor's, etc)
Krav Maga
Ninjutsu
Kick Boxing/Muay Thai
Judo/BJJ
Boxing
Karate

That is just personal opinion based around what I have used during work and in real life situations.

There is no best martial art,

Only best martial artist.

^^ he speaks the truth

To be honest if you don't want to be put in jail or accused of "using excessive force in self defence . Do not throw elbows, knees or start bashing there face in with punches.

I'm surprised no one has said Hapkido . Like in Overall self defence in all aspects group fights 2vs 1 scenarios ,falling and subduing people with out "Excessive force" hapkido stands out on tops. Hands down hapkido is the most complete self defence martial arts.

Although if you don't have the time to dedicate to hapkido I believe that boxing would be a great way to defend your self .

I am starting Jeet Kune Do next week. The teacher seems realy good at what he does and he is very polite and willing to teach his students. I also read alot about Krav Maga which is more difficult for me to find a teacher in my area but not impossible.

Basically I just want to defend myself. Should I go the extra mile and find Krav Maga or is Jeet Kune Do good enough for real life situations (no guns no knifes just avoid a punch and hit back or something like that)?

I'll tell you something interesting about Jeet Kune which my master told me . Bruce lee was was only successful practitioner of June Kune Do as a fighter and internationally. of All the rest his students didn't fair as well .

Bruce Lee always believe you should of had your power and in front . Sadly this doesn't work for the majority of the world . Ergo What works for one person won't doesn't necessarily work for you .

I'm not saying Jeet Kune Do is bad , but if it's so good why isn't it known as a dominate self defence martial arts.

So go with Krav Maga or better yet find another martial arts which is suited for yourself.

Hi

Controversial theme, didn't have the time to run through all 7 pages. I've been studying martial arts 13 years now and for real situations I would recommend:

Ninjutsu(but be sure the instructor is legit which is something VERY rare, misunderstood art)
Systema
Philippino arts(FCS, escrima, arnis etc)
(maybe) Krav Maga but it builds no structure in the body, weak body mechanics theory.... better study something else before getting there.

This.

BJJ, Judo, Boxing, Muai Thai, Kickboxing all of them are very good but they are sports. But better do some kickboxing or muai thai before Krav Maga, they build better structure.

Please don't rush. It is like being a good PUA- it will take some time before you're effective. Take your time and enjoy the benefits of training

I hope I helped.

IMO Kung Fu is by far the best martial art about, this is a biased response as ive been doing it for about 5/6 years now and depending on the style its a full system covering everything you can think of, think Jackie Chan, any situation no matter what.

Ive tried Karate, boxing, tae kwon do, capoeria, and wushu and this is still the one i would always go back to.

This is of course based on self defense which is what i wanted from a martial art.

However if you want fitness then i would definitely recommend boxing or kickboxing.
