Hey Mimic --
First off --
welcome to the forums, always happy to see a new face!
To your question, I've written a few articles on my blog about this which you might find helpful.
First, the idea of
self concept -- who are we, how do we define ourselves? where does it come from?

Secondly, if we don't like who we are, and we want to change,
what are actionable things we can do to change when we are afraid to?

I've also got a number of other things I discuss -- where social proof comes from, how to reinforce your image to make what you want to show others, the reality that they see.
My favorite on the subject --

I've done a horrible job of organizing the information, but rest assured I'm in the process of redoing it so it is more intuitive for new visitors to get the information they need in the quickest amount of time. I'm actually in the process of writing "The Ultimate Guide to Self Concept", which I'm hoping will be an asset to anyone with these types of questions.
Let me know if I can do anything else to help you -- I'll be happy to.
