You read the entire thread; the answer is already there . . . several times. And there are far too many clues. And it's not there in code or in symbolic fashion. A few people simply wrote the answer down, as it is.

Interestingly, it seems only people who have figured it out on their own are able to spot the answers. Isn't this fascinating? This is the power of the ego. We can have something right in our face and we can't even see it. This is the emperor's robe. This is:

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myq8upzJDJc[/youtube]

And just like realizing that the emperor's is naked or stopping to appreciate beautiful music, there's no questioning it. . . it's just reality. It's an understanding.

So let's start again. Reading the entire thread is entertaining, but it's clutter. It's like trying to appreciate music by watching the crowd cross the violinist's path. To appreciate it, you'll want to listen to the musician, watch him and focus on his music. Appreciating his music because he's in a concert hall is dis-genuine. Not appreciating his music because he's in a subway stop is inattentive.
Quote:
I just tried to meditate on this riddle for the first time in my life.
To be clear, "meditation" for this exercise is not 'deep thought'. In fact, it's almost just like appreciating good music. You don't stand in front of the violinist thinking of his fingering, scales, time changes, etc . . . This 'clutter' gets in the way of music. No, you just stand there . . . and let the music move you. You just empty your mind. The music might make you happy, it might illicit some thoughts. Fine . . . you don't stop it. You just go with it. It might shift towards confusion . . .but you don't fight that either. It might give you some thoughts, sure. But you just go with it. You just flow. You just accept it. Your mind will wander from time to time . . . but you'll always go back to the music.

You just need to accept this 'riddle' like one should accept good music or the fact that the emperor truly is naked.
Quote:
The riddle is of a boy. Not ME. I have been personifying it. Because of my ego I suppose. The boy is told to THINK, there was no real question.
You did this before and you'll do it again. - "I suppose this. I suppose that. This is this. This is that. It's not this, it's not that." - Your mind is moving . . . but what is moving it? The monkey and the boy share a specific interaction. There is nothing more and there is nothing less. It's OK when your mind wanders. Enjoy it . . . but bring your mind back to the monkey and the boy and their interaction.
Quote:
He thinks about death etc... he then decides. did he shoot or not? We dont know what he decided. So why are we even answering it for ourselves????
How do you know that 'he thinks about death'? Did he whisper this only to you? How do you know he decided anything? Your mind is moving again . . . what is moving it? Then what is moving the thing that is moving your mind? What is moving the thing that is moving the thing that is moving your mind? Is it the Monkey and the boy?

Remove the 'things' and go straight to the source. The monkey, the boy, and the questions. That's all. . .

I like your reply. Youre insightful and youre good at it. But it just takes me back to where I have already been 10000 times over.

Im just sitting here laughing at myself now. I dont get it. Ok I suck at this riddle. Im no Zoan monk. Or great philosopher... You win monkey. I lose. Please just tell me the answer hahaha :(

Unless the boy shot himself????????????

You could also try to PM Zac L for his take on this, he was the one posting it in the first place.
Be prepared for 8 hours of explanation.

I realised to myself... I didnt care enough. If you really care this much about an answer. PM him
Well, monkey mind has a lot to offer. I dont pretend to fully understand it but talking to Zac L definately opened up my mind. If you are ready, those 8 hours will be worth your while.

You're almost there.

If you've read it 1000 times and you've just arrived back at the beginning. This is, in fact good. You just need to take one last brave step.

This is a step no one on here can tell you or instruct you how to take. Sometimes you just have to pump your fist in the air and cry and the top of your lungs... 'Nooooooo! And take that step.'

I had a mate who was in the closet about his sexuality. Every time he would bring up the subject he'd argue constantly, to himself and to me why he shouldn't be doing this and why he should be dating that girl... and how much he loved fucking her. He kept asking me is this right, am I doing the right thing? I said to him, only you can answer that one.

I presented him with monkey mind. And again he kept asking me, what is the God damn answer to it? I'm hoping one day he'll stop the race of his mind and just take a leap of faith and go with it. Only then will he find that answer.

Sometimes there is no right or wrong answer... The only thing that matters is taking that jump into the unknown.

When you get Monkey mind, something transcendal happens to you. It is not a case of looking for the answer. It's a case of letting the answer find you. And one more thing to chew on. You address kasabi as if he knows the answer to this one. What makes you so sure?

Don't mean to bump an old thread, but it was high on the message board anyway.

I didn't get it at first (and maybe I still don't), but after thinking about it a little, this is what I got out of it..

The monkey tells the boy to Stop, and to think before he shoots him.

I think the boy represents me, and that I must think, and make my own decisions. If I shoot him, I am going against my mother (she "dies"), but I please my father. Vice Versa.

So either way, I can't please everybody. I have to make my own decisions for myself.

:) Was I on target?

I like the quote though and it's pretty cool how you can learn from them. Any more?? :)

$15 via SPAM for the first direct answer in my PM!!! You have my word that I will pay HOWEVER only If it really is a eureka answer

I just want a direct answer. Everyones pushing me towards it. Thats great I appreciate it so much, But I cant get it still. I DONT KNOW. I accept this. I find it funny. and stupid.

Kasabi has been great, but Its like hes trying to teach a goldfish how to talk.

Ive had heaps of answers:

Ask the monkey why? not an answer.
Shoot the monkey and end the confusion... My mum dies.
Give up... not an answer.
Think up metaphors that the monkey represents... Too complicated, keep it simple.
There is no answer.... No also wrong
I am not the boy.... wrong

I learnt that Im done looking for logical things and justifying them.

The answer has to come from within... But when does this happen......

Someone just gimme this eureka moment please. I dont care if it spoils the fun of solving it for myself.

Please. I just want a direct answer. :(

Ha Ha Ha Ha... try days... weeks...

I dunno if you watch The Simpsons, but remember that scene where Mr Burns has been awake for days and grows a beard.

Burns: [holding a model airplane] We'll take the spruce moose! Hop in!

Smithers: But sir, it's just a mod...

Mr. Burns: [takes out a pistol] I said, "Hop in."

THATS ME NOW...

People telling you to hop in a fucking toy plane and find enlightenment!!

"Hop in.... JohnnyBannanas.... Hop in.." [Pulls out Pistol and cocks it]

I'm actually getting tired of this. I'll summarize what I know about the koan:

#1 The monkey is telling the truth
#2 It is not to be taken as a metaphore. The monkey is a monkey, etc...
#3 The answer shouldn't be searched via logic
#4 Shooting the monkey, not shooting the monkey, asking the monkey etc... will not get me anywhere
#5 The answer is already in the thread
#6 But it still doesn't matter because if I'd repeat it, it's not the answer anymore(wtf?)
#7 Getting pissed is part of the process

#8 I should stop thinking and take a "leap" and focus on how much I love my parents

#9 I have yet no idea how #8 will get me the answer.
#10 What I know however that writing this summary is pretty much pointless in the process of finding the answer(because I'm thinking) so I really have no idea why am I doing this lol. it's kind of a last desperate attempt.
