| So tonight I hit a bar with two of my friends. It took me some time to actually get my nerves up, so I ordered a couple beers and played some pool. After an hour or so, we were sitting at a table, and neither of us had made an approach yet. It was time to do something. My friend indicated a 2-set, both women, sitting by themselves. I told him to go over and introduce me as his friend from California who was in town visiting and get some suggestions for places to show me.
He couldn't get the nerve up, so I said, "fine," and walked over myself. I approached the larger one from the side, talking to her rather than my target, a somewhat attractive blonde with a pinched face. Both were about 10 years older than me, but it didn't matter. It's all about practice and experience right now.
I walked over and delivered the exact line I'd told my friend to use. "Hi, my friend's visiting from California. He's only here for a few days, and I was wondering if you could help me think of some places to show him while he's here." From there, we started a conversation discussing different points of interest in the St. Louis area. When my target, the blonde, threw out the arch as an option, I gave her a bit of a neg by making a big deal of how cliche and boring the suggestion was. They asked me to get my friend over to join the conversation, so I called him over. We talked for a while. When the blonde showed interest in a Joan Jett song, I asked her to dance, and we went up to the dance floor. We were both terrible, but it didn't really matter. When we got back, she mentioned that she wanted to hear the "Thong" song. I told her I'd go request it the next time I saw the dj. She replied with the usual, "yeah right, that's just talk" nonsense. So when the dj came back, I requested the song. It was the next one to play, and I insisted she go dance on the stage as a penalty for doubting me. She said she wouldn't go unless I went with her, so we both went back to the floor. I told her to get up on the stage, and she said, "you, first." So I got on the stage, danced for a bit; she laughed and smiled, clearly enjoying the show. Then I got down and told her it was her turn. She got up and danced for a bit but came down almost immediately. We danced for the rest of the song. When she asked if this was how they danced in California (it had come out earlier that I went to school there), I said, "No, this is." I turned her around, and we started dancing with my crotch right against her ass. She was into it for about 15 seconds before getting self-conscious and turning back around. I definitely need to take dance lessons. Anyway, we returned to the table and chatted a bit longer before she and her friend got up to pay their tabs. I took the opportunity to return to my friends.
Back with them, I got ribbed about my performance on the dance floor, but they didn't have much ammo since I had danced with one more chick than they had all night. A set of 3 girls came in after about 10 minutes, all attractive and around our age. I decided to open with the same line. I like this line for 2 reasons:
1. It gets the conversation started.
2. It nets you some good information on hot spots girls like to go in your area.
That conversation didn't go anywhere; we were standing, and after a couple minutes, they went to the bar to get drinks, and I returned to my friends. I didn't see them the rest of the night.
The third and final set I opened was a guy and girl playing pool. We were leaning on the table they had been using when they came back to it. I offered a challenge to play teams against them, but they declined. The girl had had a few and was dancing constantly, but the guy wasn't dancing with her. As they played, I gave her some advice on which shots to take and where to aim on the ball. She started talking to me in between shots, leaning close and giving IOIs. Then I goofed by making a stupid pun about her holding a stick with balls. We talked a bit after that, but I noticed my friends were ready to leave. I told her it was a pleasure meeting her, shook her hand goodbye, and we left.
Though I made a million mistakes, chief among which was not approaching the girls I most wanted to talk to, I did make significant progress in that, on any other night, I never would have talked to any of these women and just drank beer with my friends while we talked about how much more we'd rather be talking to girls. Tonight was about practice and taking a step forward. As always, thoughts, opinions, and advice are greatly appreciated.
