I know this is a very ignorant question, but I was wondering what would be the best type of martial art to learn for real life situations. I plan on traveling through europe and I would like to learn some self defense skills I could put in real life.

You're not gonna learn anything in a few weeks or months
I've been doing martial arts for 11 years and I would never try anything in the street
Every martial art "works" for the most part. Except Wing Chun (unless you're out at a gay bar and get into a slap fight)

I think Wing Chun is one of the only martial arts that actually makes you a worse fighter.

Self defense--- depends on how much time you are really going to commit, you cant go to a 1 hour class and be ready to dominate everyone on the street.

Muay Thai or boxing are good, a lot of conditioning and cardio in both as well to get you in better shape.

I agree with Soul Fighter on... Most all martial arts improve your skill...

Basic Kickboxing though takes skill to master... It teaches the basics of kicking and punching effectively... Hitting Hard Fast.. Plus it is one hell of a cardio work out that will get you into top shape.. (Krav Maga, Karate, Wushu, Kenpo, TaiChi, Muy Thai, Aikido, Yadda Yadda Yadda are all good)
Do your research.. make sure its a good school and not a "black belt factory".. a BBF will more often then not give you a black belt and only have taught you half the stuff a "real" black belt would have earned..

All in all.. Like most skills in life.. MA takes conditioning.. Practice.. Practice.. Practice Untill the moves you are performing is what you will now Naturally do in a fight.. if you condition yourself to block or strike a certain way in a fight... that is what your body will do.. because in a fight.. you do not have time to think... being that I hope you are not a bully and using this to hurt others...

You will be forced to be in a Reactive mode(defense).. which means.. responding to an incoming threat which has started before you began defending... Through conditioning and very important.. sparring at full speed (wear gloves guys haha).. Your body learns what works.. and what doesnt... do you know how it learns what doesnt? YOU GET HIT!
haha.. best to learn these lessons in a Dojo(classroom) Instead of while being attacked by Thug 1 and Thug 2..

Judo is also an effective real life situation combat MA.. alot of the movements are able to be used on the street and is the art that is taught to the police in Japan..

BJJ is great for in the ring.. and if u end up on the ground in a fight.. sure.. but try getting an armbar on someone while his buddy is stomping on your head.. No Bueno..

*NOTE* Street fights are sloppy... most street fights are fought uncoordinated and wild... Your opponent though may be skilled.. while under stress often will not hit you with a *proper strike* If you have not conditioned yourself to improvise in situa

Weapons Fighting... I would Def recommend which has a few names for the same damn thing... Arnis, Kali, Eskrima.. Often taught with Kali/Eskrima sticks.. but the same motions are used for knife fighting..

*NOTE* You never want to EVER be in a knife on knife fight with someone.. In most cases even if you are skilled.. You will be cut.. Knife slices and puncture wounds are NASTY and very Dangerous.. do to all the sensitive blood vessels in the body along with everything else...

Though.. if in a knife fight or having to use a knife in a self defense mode.. Best to be skilled with one.. then unskilled..
Great example of this...

You just put Wushu, Tai Chi, and Aikido in the same sentence as Krav Maga, Karate, Kenpo, and Muay Thai... I think you just lot all credibility. Don't dare post anything about martial arts again.

HAHAHA... I have seen Wushu effective in street fighting... same with Aikido... and american soldiers use to be trained in Tai Chi... they are effective IRL situations..

I never studied any of those three... but I recognize them.. if u read the rest of the post.. I do know what the hell I am talking about..
My Job depends on it.. I am very good at my job and take it very seriously..

If you dont like Aikido, Wushu, or Tai Chi.. you dont have to..

I have a long history in MA.. I know what Im talking about silly boy...

Genuine whats MA?

iv done boxing for 7 month, karate for 4 years, tae kwon do for almost 2 years and im currently in MMA and there all good but for street fight id say boxing and MMA are the best, because in a street fight people usualy use there hands and both of them cover it. id advice MMA since it covers everything from ground work to stand up striking. hope this helps.

MA = Martial Arts

BJJ = Brazilian Jujitsu (if someone asks)

MMA Is great for street fighting.. I use the combination when I am called to do so..

My business is personal protection of my client... so.. I dont "compete"... what I do is Stop the Threat.. My Job is To WIN.. no matter what.. because of what the consequences of a Loss might be... Serious Injury and up to Death...

Once a Threat is Recognized and Assessed.. It is Dealt with Accordingly used with The "Use of Force" Laws... I am governed by the Laws that govern the police...

Use of Force
http://www.policetest.info/FORCE_CONTIN ... _FORCE.htm
and for more in depth look into the Use of Force
Use of force by police PDF
https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/nij/176330-1.pdf

Deadly force doesnt always mean killing.. It can mean incompacitation..

No matter what.. I am not going to lose... Physically.. or Legally...

No.. I am not the Toughest man in the world.. Im Tough enough

but that is where my other tools and the use of a Team comes in... Either way.. Me, My Team and My Clients are going home Tonight...

Bruce Lee never fought for real. He only played a martial artist on TV at a time when Americans thought that all Chinese people knew Kung Fu. Don't mention him again in a serious martial arts discussion.
