Dont watch no videos, don't read no internet gospel shit. You're not an idiot, you're just not taking action. To lose the fat you just need to intake less calories than your body burns daily. You've a high metabolism so you wont have to work out or run really if you're just wanting to trim the fat. But it'd sure as hell speed it up. Anyway just stop cramming your face and drowning your inside with the devils poison. Simple.

100% agree with this. I have seen threads on hundreds of forums like this, and its interesting how everyone automatically says "do cardio". The effect of it, is to to burn calories, but instead of burning calories, why not just, not eat those calories in the first place? You can do cardio as well if you want, but think how many calories you burn with say, 30mins hour of cardio - you can probably undo it by eating a large Snickers. Plus, you will find in calorie deficit that you are too run down to do cardio, and doing cardio on top of that will be making your body scream out for junk food. Just eat under calorie deficit, but keep your protein high.

I think someone mentioned SPAM earlier, this is the right advice. General rule being, only lean meats with salad/vegeatables (but no carrot, corn or beets). This will reduce your bodyfat for sure, and then after a suffcient time, just work out your maintenance level, and work out a sensible non-restrictive diet, and you will be able to keep the fat off.

To an extent, I do agree, though I'm not sure I would describe my average day as stuffing my face and drinking the devil's poison...that was kinda weird.

Having to move back home didn't help, since my mom will always buy chips and cookies and offer them to me before a piece of fruit. But now I will have a dinner with carrots and a sandwich instead of potato chips. I will drink water or milk instead of pop, and if I get hungry at night I grab a banana or nutri-grain bar (I work at a convenience store, I can't get gourmet ingredients).

But I don't see the problem with working out. To be honest, in a geek moment, I found my old Dance Dance Revolution gear from maybe five years ago. I will happily play a game that happens to be a workout rather than drive to a track to go to work.

having a "beer gut" has nothing to do with drinking beer other than the calories you take in. work out, eat right. low carb is not always the way to go, most people have the best success on a vegan diet. I'll post more in-depth about this and the studies that have show zero link to beer and the "beer belly" when I have more time.

Been trying to kill my beer gut for months, only it wasn't from beer...It's all been said above, but I will tell you this:

The most important thing to do is DO SOMETHING. Don't be a hero and do it all at once either, you WILL fail. Gradual lifestyle changes is whats going to do it. Sure you can do P90X, or some no carb diet...kill yourself and loose the fat, but it will just return if you keep up the bad choices and habits that have led up to this fatness.

Like they said diet, diet diet, have a choice between some eggs in the morning, or a McDonald supreme breakfast? Well, you know which one is healthier. If you have a smart phone, I recommend taking a picture of every meal you have...just take it out, snap a photo, and put it away, don't think about it any more than that... subconsciously you will start to make better food choices because you know you just snapped a photo of something that is wrong to eat.

OK, no preaching....but just a little quick math: (this opened my eyes and made loss an attainable goal.)

1 pound of fat = ~4000 cals (or kcals, some will say 3500)

This means you need to have a deficit of 4000 cals total to loose 1 pound of fat...

Naturally your body burns a certain amount of cals to operate this is call your BMR...or Basal Metabolic Rate...

MY BMR = -2095
MY daily food intake = +1650
My Deficit = 2095-1650 = 445 (meaning in 8.9 days on that I will loose a pound with no extra work)
Now if I do 30 min of cardio a day = -500
Total deficit = 445+500 = 945 (meaning I will loose a pound of fat every 4.2 days)

In other words, since my BMR is 2095, if I diet and take in 1650 calories, I will loose a pound of fat every 9 or so days, I can speed that up if I do 30 min of cardio a day...its math...

Very simple math, with a lot of variations, but I hope it opens your eyes.

Make any sense?

Is there a way to calculate the basic metabolic rate? I have to assume that an accurate measurement would require some basic medical instruments. Maybe an estimation can be found based on combining gender, race, height, etc with things like BMI and heartrate, but I doubt it's reliable. At least for me, you're talking to a statistician.

Of course, remember that its an estimate, so It's actually a fairly simple equation:
Quote:
English BMR Formula
Women: BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )
Men: BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year )

Metric BMR Formula
Women: BMR = 655 + ( 9.6 x weight in kilos ) + ( 1.8 x height in cm ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )
Men: BMR = 66 + ( 13.7 x weight in kilos ) + ( 5 x height in cm ) - ( 6.8 x age in years )
However, I prefer just Googling for a BMI calculator online, tons of them, and you don't have to do the math...

After I posted I got to thinking: Calories are calories, however you can speed up the amount of calories you are burning in a day, basically boosting your BMR, by taking thermogenics. I would not blindly recommend using them, but I got to thinking, how does hydroxycut promise weight loss with no change in diet, or anything, if your taking in more cals than your BMR, even if elevated, your not going to loose....Errr side track, sorry.

Also, its taken me years to realize that strength training is far more efficient than cardio, as far as burning fat and boosting metabolic processes...

Another thing I realized is: It's absolutely pointless to go burn 800 calories doing some extreme cardio activity for an hour, then go cram 1000 calories in a post workout meal...I just wasted an hour! Workout smart, itll pay off.

If your interested in numbers, (why calories are bullshit anyway) and awesome info on measurement, no to mention a simple diet to follow, check out Tim Ferris' book called the 4 hour body. Good luck man!

Been a few months since I started this thread...wow.

Just updating to thank everyone for their input. 6 weeks back, give or take, I started to act instead of typing and talking. I still have a pot belly going, unfortunately, but have noticed an increase in muscle mass. Plus, my family is on board with my improved diet. Drinking less, eating better, exercising more, and I am just feeling better. You may not see me joining the Lakers as a new point guard, but I'm feeling better lol.
