around campus/on public transportation specifically.

Remember, the opener is just to start the conversation and introduce yourself as someone different from the rest.
On a campus, I usually call out to a girl that's passing, like "Hold on a second". Then stop and think for a bit, maybe look around, then when the anticipation is built up, I tell them I was trying to think of a pick up line, but couldn't come up with one. This demonstrates interest while being original and most importantly on a college campus, gives a story to tell her sorority buddies.
