Hey guys. I tried karate for the first time (since i was maybe 8 years old) yesterday. I was pretty disappointed, not happy with the lack of intensity. maybe i should look into a kickboxing or similar program instead. can anyone share their experiences with martial arts, because i'd like to get a good cardio workout from something like this.

any suggestions/tips are appreciated. Thanks!

well Martial Arts is mostly for the art itself. If you want a cardio workout then you can sprint or run or lift heavy

Join an MMA gym.

I don't think there's any martial art (or combo) that will make you work harder.

I go 4 times a week. Transformed my body and increased my strength exponentially.

Most MMA gyms I been to have separate BJJ and Muay Thai programs.
I'd go, try both, see what you like better. If you like both, do both, if you like one, stick to one.

Personally, I'm a Muay Thai and Boxing guy myself, and that's some real intensity every session there. Gonna build yourself a great physique too - get some muay thighs for the ladies

Well my experience for martial arts has always been that it's been more for the fighting and self defense aspect of it, but with the schools, sometimes they'll start out easier so you can get the patterns down before you go harder. I got a punching bag a while back and I used that for cardio workouts and used it as cardio. But I'm starting insanity soon and I'm hoping that'll help my MMA as well as get me a six pack, haha.

I would also go with MMA if it is workout what you seek, it is undoubtedly a great sport. But however on my personal experience I would most definately suggest RBSD (reality based self defence) to you. Krav maga in particular, there you will learn how to fucking defend yourself, if you ever will encounter a situation where it is needed. I have attended it for 2 years now and I can assure you it is an effective system, and also where I train we have killer workouts too.

As above ^

Join an MMA gym or training class, it gets you in shape very quickly and is probably the best form of self defence I've ever seen. Its also really fun giving your mates a beating in training if they're willing to come along!

I myself do boxing and have never ever complained about it being too easy or lack of intensity.
