This one isn't highly original, but it's simple and I think it can be done without appearing desperate for approval. Works in a nightclub with a two-or-more set, as long as the girls look like they're having a good time (e.g. smiling / laughing).

"Hey, you guys look like you're having fun."

Just a casual observation -- not a line or a question -- that helps you feel the temperature of the group. Best to toss it out there while facing away from them. If they respond warmly, like by telling you what's so fun or what they're celebrating, then you're golden. Just a friendly guy who's going to add a little variety to their night out. They let down their guard and you're on your way.

But let's say the girls give you the cold shoulder, ignore you, won't make eye contact and suddenly seem anxious. You've dropped the opener, but they're not responding...

"So you're NOT having fun? You're just PRETENDING to have fun? Are you guys even friends?" Here, you're teasing them for being unwilling to respond to such an innocent remark. They realize it's a little rude, a little weird to not respond.

Hopefully, they laugh and then ease the tension by saying how close they are as friends, while you play the skeptic and quiz them about how much they really know about their friend. If there's a dude there, it's a good, natural way to find out if he's with one of them.

If these chicks are STILL being chilly, probably best to eject. But if you're feeling lucky, you can make one last bid:

Take a step back and say, "OMG, I think I know what your game is: You pretend to have fun as a way to get guys to come talk to you. You guys are trying to be a fun magnet, even though you're not really having fun. And it worked, because here I am talking to you!"

If they respond in any way to this, even negatively, you can accuse them of being actresses, and from there you can riff on what movies or TV shows you think you saw them in. That triggers her imagination, which will take down what's left of her bitch shield. You can then make a joke of wanting to be her agent and how you'll need her phone number for that. We can practice sex scenes, etc.

Haven't tried it in the field yet, tho. What do you guys think?

sounds like a good way to open a difficult/quiet set, or if they have a low energy at that point. easy way to get in look like a fun guy and bring their energy up.

Sounds weak. I see what you're going for, and there are much quicker ways to get to the same point using a similar approach.

I think you should go try it out at least a dozen times to see if it works for you.
