I was IM'ing a girl I had never talked to before and this is how the convo went (it wasnt a long one)

ME: Hey whos that in your profile picture?!
HB: um me?
ME: WOW you actually use a picture of yourself?? I got mine out of a mail order catalog
HB: cool

I couldnt think of anything to say after this.. How would you guys have responded to this and what would be a good way to initiate another conversation with this girl in the future or should I just forget her and focus on other woman

I tried this on about 10 other girls that ive never met in Ims and only one of them responded with more than a 1 word long reply and it wasnt a good one

ME:Who is that girl in your profile pic?
HB:What do you mean who!
ME:well I mean who is the picture of silly
HB:Are you serious lol welll obviously me!!!
ME:Woah you are using a picture of yourself? that is insanity I got mine out of a mail order catalog
HB:Okay fuck yourself bye fucking idiot

The opener obviously isnt working very well and I need to come up with something better (I found this opener on this site and decided to give it a shot) But this last girl really took me by surprise Im not sure if it was the insanity comment that set her off or what

Yyyeah this isn't working. Stop it with that opener. It takes a while to develop, and until then, it's just weird, then it makes you look weird because it's not that funny to justify all of that before it.

Saying "cool" with no followup is the same as "Mhm." in real conversations. "Okay, acknowledged, but I don't have anything to reply."
They have nothing to reply to "I got mine out of a mail order catalog" since it's a statement, not open-ended at all. And you didn't put a smiley after it, so maybe they weren't sure you were kidding in the first place.

Get the e-book by Derek Lemont called "The Online Game". It has good examples for first messages and guidelines for IM game.

I will look into that book But what would you consider to be a good opener for Iming girls you have never really met on facebook and other social networking sites? Im very new to all this and trying it all out online to help build confidence in myself before going out into the real world.. I usually make people laugh already so I think once I get the hang of it it will hopefully come naturally to me

Thing is, you don't need an opener if you already exchanged messages.

What I do is message first, get IM address by second or third message, then start IMing right away at the first opportunity. Then all I start with something along the lines of "Hey! So let's get to know each other a little bit, m'kay? "

Nothing fancy, just set the mood of the chat. If you start gloomy, the chat will be gloomy. If you start with high energy and a fun attitude, she will copy that. And since chatting with you made her happy, that's bonus points for you. Then go on with normal get-to-know-you routines, name your five best traits, etc. Make sure to make fun of her sometimes, joke around, and don't fuck around IMing too long.


Also, if it helps, my standard first message consists of:

-A variation of "Hey! You seem cute/cool/sweet. Of course, I could be wrong, and that smile/those looks are hiding a fericious chihuahua, who knows ;P" (use one that fits)

Then I say something about her profile. Something that caught my eye about it and I like, or that I miss her introduction, because you can get to know someone so much better by the way they write about themselves, or just say that she seems like someone I want to get to know better. Make sure to mention something that you like about them as a person, or it will seem like you just like their looks.

If they have enough info on their profile, I go for the MSN right away (Add me on MSN, Let's chat. My address is xxx@xxx)
But if they have no introduction ("About myself") or brief profiles, then I ask them to "write a bit about yourself, blow my mind "

Usually by my second message I get an IM address back.

me: Your profile says you live in texas and I live in NY so unless you have a teleportation machine...

me: It must be a pretty boring party anyways considering your on here..
HB: nah Im just waiting my turn to play some beer pong
me: Oh well your lucky I live so far away or I would come kick your ass at beer pong..

me: alright but you better not be a sore loser I dont want any drama afterwards!

then she got off Im guessing to take her turn... I could probably #close on this one but Im not going to seeing as she lives across the country lol

lol, yeah, that won't work. That's far away. This going in the direction of being internet buddies. Move on, I say, but it was good practice.

And yeah this was solely for practice with no intent of anything else.. I had another convo with that same opener with an HB7.5 and she played along with it for quite a while I could tell she was having fun with the conversation...

the chicks that are replying with one or two words "cool" "mhm" "idk" etc. when you first talk to them are low interest level girls. basically they arnt too interested in you. you have to build up more attraction with them, using push-pull (complimenting her than taking it away) and some cocky funny stuff. havent done online game with IM in forever, but id just open with "Its prince charming. whos this?" then shed be like "its blah blah haha." then you could criticize her on her name etc. or go into a story-roleplaying routine on how your gonna rescue her from the distress shes in
