Had a conversation with one of my good friends recently about how guys ask girls out on dates...

I told her I keep it simple and just say something like, "We should get food/coffee/etc. some time."

She said that guys can do that, but it makes it seem like they have no balls. She much rather prefers guys who make it clear they're asking a girl out on a date. I.e. "you want to go out sometime?" or "we should go on a date" or whatever.

I would have dismissed this, but then I remembered that I first asked out my ex in the way I usually do (which can be construed as just asking to hang out platonically, I guess) and although I saw it as a date, she later told me she didn't think it was a date until I held her hand.

I've always figured that if you ask a girl you don't really know to go get food/coffee/whatever, she'd usually understand it's a date, not a hang out.

What do you guys think? Are there certain guidelines to the wording of when you ask a girl out?

none... but the basic rule still applies
you're not allowed to hit on her until she's attracted

so you can ask for a date, grab a bite, accompany me to this and that...
if she goes out, she already made an effort, don't screw it up, ;)

I've found using the word "let's" works well. "Let's meet up." "Let's go grab dinner." "Let's..." It's the same wording you would use for a friend. You don't text your best friend and say "we should go hang out sometime." Just act like you've already climbed that natural social staircase of familiarity with a girl and you will come across as confidently leading her without seeming domineering or overly aggressive.

I normally just present a situation n invite..."hey dork :-p im having a cookout at my spot. Bring your bathing suit for slip n slide n hot tub." Is a text or very similar text to what I send out alot. Im a very flirtatious guy, if a girl is chillin she knows the deal. Im not springing it on her...also if im testing like just testing, I turn what she says into sexual shit, n use alot of n :-p faces

You're not talking to the part of her mind that is in charge. You're talking to the part of her mind that says things like "why are there no good men in the world!? Every man I have sex with is a total asshole!" and "I wish I could find a nice guy to settle down with." Isn't it natural and expected that that part of her mind would tell you things like "act like a faggot whipped bitch" and "ask her out on a date instead of making it a casual meeting"? The good news is that that part of her mind doesn't decide who she has sex with. The bad news is that you're taking advice from it!

I read a good one on askmen.com a while back... basically when you call the vag your supposed to start up a conversation and lead it to you talking about this really fun cool unique thing your doing this weekend friends... You wait for the girl to say something along the lines of, "hey that sounds like so much fun"!, or "oh I wish I could go", ... then you can invite her along and if she says no, then you can still repeat the process without giving up your power... basically, you can talk about another fun thing your doing the next weekend and wait for her to say sounds like fun... then invite her again and so on and so forth... eventually she will really start to think your adventurous and fun, and voila... 10 no's and a yes is still a yes .
