When the woman is trying to qualify herself to you it means that she is trying to obtain validation or approval from you. This is necessary part of a pick up and occurs usually in the following situation:
A PUA opens a set (group in which the woman of your choice is) and starts a interesting conversation with the whole group. At the same time he more or less ignores the woman he intends to hit on later on while simultaneously negging her a little bit. Her friends perceive the PUA as a cool guy and so does the woman he negged, however she feels a slight discomfort and the urge to validate herself to the PUA. In other words she starts being 'polite' to the PUA and she may ask him various questions (that is, she responds with IOI's). She is somewhat confused too. This is also called "qualifying herself to the PUA" as at this point it seems that the PUA possesses more value than she does. And women respond naturally to men of higher value than herself.
Alternatively, there is something we call here "disqualification". Disqualification is something the PUA has already done shortly after he approached the group (set). He disqualifies himself as the one who is interested in the woman, so the woman and her friends need not to worry. It appears as the PUA is simply trying to make a conversation and the group allows this assuming there is not any further intention of the PUA. On the other hand, when the PUA makes clear too early that he is interested in the woman, both the woman and her friends would probably not engage in the conversation with the PUA in the first place (unless his name = Brad Pitt). So, in order to circumvent this problem, the PUA 'disqualifies' himself as a potential suitor. Disqualification happens mostly by negging the women he is interested in, conveying subtly the idea that he is not interested in her.
You could say that the disqualification of the PUA, followed up with DHVs towards the group, results in qualification of the women. The woman voluntarily opens up, that is, starts interacting with the PUA very easily. (Usually, from this point on, the PUA divides his attention partly over her, partly over the group, while still throwing some negs at her. As result of further negging, she proceeds with her qualification). This is called phase A2 of the pickup. All this negging needs to slow down a bit at some point and the PUA must somewhat start rewarding the woman for her efforts, while still conveying higher value. This is called phase A3.
