I'm in Winston-Salem. Think I'll pass this weekend, but thanks for keeping me posted! Haven't made up my mind about moving back to Raleigh or not. I forgot that the jarheads are at Camp Lejeune, LOL.

If you have a lot of devotion, karate will give you more than just the ability to defend yourself. Trust me, karate isn't what it's made out to be, it can be just as effective as any other martial art if used correctly and we do practice defending ourselves in street situations and from weapons and multiple assailants. For a quick fix of self-defence, Krav Maga would be the best, but for me, Karate gives me discipline, confidence and inner peace, expressing myself through forms and testing my skills in competition fighting. I've had to use it in self-defence situations more than once and because of my training and my counter-attacks are built into me, I don't have to think about them, I just do them, they have worked better than I could have ever expected. So yeah, if you have devotion and patience, karate will teach you more than just how to defend yourself. I've also started aikido to compliment my training in karate :)

A long time ago, I started with what was then known as "American Karate." The system was eventually renamed to Sanshin-Kai, I think. They supplemented their striking with an Okinawan grappling and nerve point art called Tuite. Unfortunately the training culture was such that Tuite was regarded as "special knowledge" only taught to more disciplined students in a special class. As a teenager I didn't meet those lofty discipline requirements, and so my training sort of came to a dead end at that school. Subsequently I moved to London and found that other martial arts practices were rather different, freely intermixing the most basic beginners with the most advanced practitioners, imparting whatever knowledge was to be had. Also that the training generally available in a major city had far more depth than what I was used to, even though my karate had given me a solid foundation in basic stuff, particularly kicks.

I'm sure there's good karate out there somewhere. I've seen TV shows about that sort of thing. There's also tons of bad karate out there though. It just depends on the history, the geography, and the training standard. Karate makes a lot of people snicker about fat black belts.

Its a combination of learning defensive skills with offensive skills

requiring to be trained in more than one marital arts

Ju-jitsu for defensive

muay tai for offensive

its a winning combination but takes alot of dedication to master and repeated practice to be awesome at it 24/7

I don't agree. Although I have been exposed to many styles, it's clear to me that there are a few that are specifically geared towards real world survival, and really don't need other styles to be complete. If you get to the point of handling real world survival by studying several styles, that's fine, but you don't have to. Just pick a style that concentrates on actually getting the job done.

Your entitled to your opinion but most of these modern day classes like mma although their good and all ,they don't go in depth enough they teach way too much way to fast. Ju-jitsu if taught propally like the way they use to train the Japanese army has a set time in which you have to practice and re practise skills time and time again until you clearly understand them before moving on.

Its the same with muay Tai which was used by tai solders.

their a winning combination defensive with offensive which is all any fight is

ju-jitsu is all about disarming multiple targets at the same time and imobilizing them

whilst muay tai is all about literally destroying Evey part of your opponent making use of your most damaging part of your body the elbow.

you need 2 martial arts that go in depth and cover everything

To be a complete fighter you need:striking, grappling.
MMA can be very useful for a streetfight, if you have a good clinch and can knee, you can win a lot of fights, if you have good punch-kickcombo's you can also win a lot of fights. grappling can help, but if someone throws you on the floor , and the floor is hard, you can injure yourself, but bjj , wrestling can be very useful.

The best advice I can give you is: try to avoid streetfights

I am saying there are styles, already covered in this thread, that have striking, grappling, groundfighting, multiple opponents, weapons, killing, and have typically been used by bodyguard / security forces / special ops type persons in the real world. They don't need 2 styles, their systems are complete. If you think all styles are incomplete, try more styles. Try this one for instance. http://russianmartialart.com/ None of those head instructors need another style. Really. Serious.

I would say regular boxing. Boxers are very dangerous in a street fight because they hit so fast and hard. I mean at least half (if not more) of all street/bar fights ends in one or two punches. Hit him hard and he goes down. Who ever gets the first hard hit in the face usually wins. Therefore, boxing is great as you'll learn how to actually hit and avoid punches very fast, and it's basically all you do.
