First of all it's verry personal.. the type of guy that you are , how it smells on you..

I've got a lot of compliments on : Joop! homme (purple) ,Baldessini strictly private, Boss Bottled, Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male, Dior Fahrenheit(I don't like it myself)..

Tip: shave ,then use the aftershave balm version much cheaper and doesn't smell so strong (It got me a lot of compliments)

These are the ones with which I've gotten compliments from women:

Eternity - Calvin Klein (an ex told me this was the most amazingly delicious scent she'd ever smelt on a man)
Crave - Calvin Klein (very fresh and light scent, ideal for summer days)
Allure - Chanel (very good for evenings, especially in the winter)
The Beat - Burberry

Georgio Armani Code is my cologne weapon of choice. gets plenty of comments. i definitely reccomend it. not cheap, but worth it.

Hugo Boss (night - i think) is always a winner.

i have a collection, its good to mix it up from time to time.

Ben.

as a girl...something i find very sexy on a man is "Terre" by Hermes... I think for a man it's always better to wear a sexy perfume than something nice but "safe" if you see what i mean...

there is this site about perfumes and colognes...it even has a test on how to chose one in harmony with your personality. it gives a lot of information. always ask a girl's (or better a gay guy's) opinion, but not a seller, they'll just try to make you buy the most expensive cologne.

btw...

some personal, yet objective advice...copy the cool guy's choices.

the 2 biggest players I've met both wore excellent perfumes.

one was an architect, very good looking 30 years old bachelor, and in his bathroom i found a bottle of Acqua di Gio (by giorgio armani).

the other guy, i met him 3 years ago, despite the fact he was only 20, he was a real sex machine, and had women completely crazy for him, and he wore a very refreshing fragrance for both guys and girls

one good advice is also changing, wearing something stronger during winter time, and refreshing for summer time

This is a great one if you are a younger guy (-30). I have a collection of about 15 different colognes, and this is a hands down winner EVERY time I go to the bar. All of the one's listed previously are good too, but I like to keep the "strength" of the scent in context with the location (Heavier colognes in clubs, lighter colognes like Aqua Di Gio in coffee shops/closer dates)

Hope this helps :)

the way i think of colognes is this, its the thing you put on your skin before you put on your clothes so it is a very personal thing as smell is the strongest of the 5 senses. it also can show what type of person you are, a classical shows the persona of a classical person, a sexual sense shows the persona of a sexual person, the other thing is your the person wearing it so pick what you like and what you feel comfortable with not because someone tells you its a magic formula to get laid, imagine buying a cologne that you think will get you laid because someone told you and you put it on and you find it disgusting youve either got to put up with it or throw it away
