'Food' is more random which gives you more chance of striking, but if you strike with the right kind of food, in this case chocolate, you are golden.

I don't know if chocolate works everywhere so maybe you should do the same thing I did and just go ask all kinds of random girls what they carry around, if you find something common and unusual you can make a similar kind of opener.

Yeah I don't think gum would really work, most people who go out to bars/clubs who smoke will have gum with them (myself included and everyone I know, even guys)
The whole chocolate thing is very interested, I've never heard of that before, maybe it's because of the country you live in? I live in england but will try the opener, seems like it could be a winner (:
