There's always something that dominates the news. An opening line I often use (and it always works) is 'what do you think, did he do it or not?' or something like that. You instantly have a conversation. It also gives a sense of mutual understanding because you didn't mention what it was about. Just the question was enough.

Oh and if she misinterprets the question and starts about a totally different subject, pretend that was you were asking about.
