Muay Thai and Weight lifting at the same time

I would like to know if it is healthy to being lifting with the intent of gaining muscle as well as training in muay thai on other nights. I would like to increase my strength but I am worried that I may overwork my muscles to the point of atrophy if I still take muay thai. Does anyone have any suggestions? I currently go to muay thai wednesdays and fridays and I have just started working out today and I plan to work out 3 times a week.

This is definitely a question for your muay thai trainer. Ask him and if you are looking for a second opinion i would suggest trying some martial art forums where theres some ppl who are actually doing what youre doing which is trying to build muscle but also practice a martial art... i really want to answer your question but i truly do not have the answer

It depends on the mindset of the trainer.

Old school thought is no. Muscle and size slow you down, require more oxygen to support, and make you gas faster.

New School, size is still bad, but you can improve strength shape and endurance through weight training.

It depends completly on the individual, asking a trainer will only garner a non impartial opinon.

It also depends on how hard you train with your muay thai and weight "lifting".

it depends on how much muscle your looking to gain..if your planning on being body builder and want to do thai boxing then yeaaa not a good idea but if your gonna put on a little size then go for it we all do at my gym and take a look at fighters there always talking about putting on a lil size but still working on speed hope this helps

Are you trying to get big? or learn to fight?
Split it up, Lift 3x a week, Muay Thai 3x a week, maybe double up on only one day of the week, leave 1-2 days for rest.

Take your proteins, vegetables, carbs, etc. People dont realize how important carbs are for muscle building

Hey all, I was also wondering if the combination of muay thai training and the weights would have an adverse affect on the body?

I have being doing weight training for a few years now, and want to add some muay thai as well, something different, confidence, the cardiovascular benefits etc

I know of a few people that train at the gym in mornings, then do their martial arts training at evening/night and they say its fine.

My main concern is are you able to train effectively for one when your still sore and tired from the other? All advice appreciated

I did the exact same combination for a few years. It Depends on what your goal is, if you want to be bodybuilder like, and still do muay thai your facing a problem.. If you just want to gain strenght and do muay thai it's still difficult but it works..Best schedule that worked for me was a 1/2 time's a week heavy powerlifting ,2/3 time's a week muay thai with one rest day in between each training (keep stretching your muscles!!)At the moment I only do powerlifting and the growth is much beter..So hope this helps you

food+working out=muscle
food+food+working out+muay tai=muscle+muay tai advancement

I boxxed for 9 years, american kick boxxed for 4 and have done ju jitsu for the past 4 years. Keep training while lifting and keeping a high calorie carb and healthy fat diet you should see plenty of gains. If you are worried about competing, get to the size you want to be at then go up 15 20 more pounds, cut then compete. You'll have your necessary gains in strength and size but also have the speed reach and strength the bloated (not so in shape) guys will be at.

Make sure you eat and rest, i do my lifting in the morning then my classes at night MMA, BJJ and MT

That way i get plenty of rest between the two

One thing I haven't seen that needs to be added: STRETCH! If you are new to weight lifting, you are going to have some very sore muslces the next day, stretching, sitting in a hot sauna, and similar things will help somewhat with this. I can tell you from experience it is very hard to throw a kick in MT when you can barely walk because of a heavy leg day.
