Since I'm at the starting point, my goal is to get some much needed practice in opening sets and engaging in a positive convo.

Of course, if the prospect of getting a phone number or time bridging is available, then I'll go for it, but my focus isn't on Phone Game, Day 2's, etc. I just want to feel more competent in the use of 3s, c&f, kino and stories

For the sake of practice - Is it better to...

A: Sit in the set until the conversation gets dull/you get blown out - then evaluate what to tweak?
or
B: Sit in the set and leave on a high note?
or
C: Go for some sort of close - either # or K - every time?

I've been trying them all and have mixed results-

A: I figure out what went wrong/what went right.
B: I leave the set on a high note and feel good, but don't know if there's anything left to be worked on - Just move on to another set.
C: I can ask for a # considering the only thing that can go wrong is for her to say "No," but is it any good if I don't calibrate and relentlessly go for the kill?

I understand things aren't so black and white, but I'm not trying to get an LTR, #close or Kclose at the moment. I just want to get off on the right foot down the PUA path.

If you want to get on the right path, then follow through. By only doing the opening every time, you don't get anything new and learn from the rest of the game. You will learn stuff from day 2s and later, that will help you in opening. Its also best to try to leave on a high note and either get a number then, or to have it so that you can come back and get the number in a bit.

D: Takeaway.

Sometimes I'll tell a set half of a story, and then leave to open another set or two. Later on THEY will come back to ME to get the end of the story, which is excellent social proof for anyone I happen to be standing with at the time.

Picking a method is really your strategy and style and I understand your asking not which method is better for results but for practice and want to know which is better for learning. I think each of those are equally important to practice seeing as they're all aspects of the game. Your going to want to know how to sit in a conversation and keep it going just as much as know when it's time to leave the set whether it be for a takeaway or to leave before things get strange then finish the process with a close of some sort. So my answer is A B/D and C.
